Each university offers English-language undergraduate degrees, gives American students access to US federal student aid for eligible programs, and publishes admissions requirements specific to applicants from US high schools. Together, the ten also cover a spread of provinces, institution types and tuition levels, from large research universities in Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver to small, undergraduate-focused universities in Quebec and Atlantic Canada. The sections below set out each stage as it applies to American applicants.

Applying Directly to a Program

Canadian universities admit students into a specific program or faculty at the point of application, which means an American student chooses a field of study before applying and is assessed against that program’s requirements. Universities set their own limits on how many programs one applicant can apply to (Queen’s, for example, allows up to three), so the choice of programs is itself a strategic decision.

That choice also fixes the high school prerequisites: a student who intends to apply to computer science, engineering or commerce at Toronto needs calculus on the transcript. For this reason, experts in Canadian university admissions recommend that families settle on target programs and map their prerequisites against the student’s course schedule by the start of junior year.

Application Systems: OUAC, Direct Applications, and Beyond

Canadian universities do not share a single application platform. Ontario universities, including Toronto, Waterloo, Queen’s and McMaster, receive applications through the Ontario Universities’ Application Centre (OUAC), where US high school students complete the Undergraduate Application as Group B applicants. UBC, Alberta, McGill, Dalhousie and Mount Allison take applications directly through their own portals.

For US students looking for the Common App at Canadian universities, two on this list accept it: Queen’s, alongside OUAC and its own international portal, and Bishop’s, alongside its direct application. Deadlines differ by university and by program, and some programs set earlier dates for supplementary materials, so applicants should build a single calendar that records the application deadline, the supplementary deadline and the document deadline for each university.

How US Transcripts, AP, IB and SAT/ACT Are Assessed

Canadian universities assess US applicants primarily on the high school record: the grades earned, the rigor of the course load and completion of program prerequisites. Each university reads US grades against its own published minimums, from a B− average at Queen’s to a 90% Grade 12 average for Waterloo Computer Science, and the universities state that competitive programs require results above those minimums. SAT requirements at colleges in Canada vary by university: SAT/ACT scores are optional at Toronto, UBC, McMaster, Queen’s, Dalhousie and Bishop’s, optional at McGill for Fall 2027 applicants who select the opt-out, and generally not required at Waterloo, Alberta and Mount Allison.

Students deciding whether to sit an exam can weigh the ACT and SAT for international applicants and plan their SAT preparation around the universities that will actually consider the score. AP coursework carries weight in two ways, as evidence of rigor in admission and, with qualifying scores, as university credit: Mount Allison, for example, can grant up to 30 credits toward a 120-credit degree for AP scores of 4 or 5.

Personal Profiles and Supplementary Applications

Grades and prerequisites carry the decision in many Canadian programs, while competitive programs add personal profiles, admission forms or supplementary applications that determine which strong applicants receive offers. For American applicants with strong grades, these components are where an application distinguishes itself, since a well-developed account of extracurriculars, initiative and academic interest can separate one high-achieving applicant from another in a pool where averages cluster near the top.

Study Permits for US Citizens

Studying in Canada as an American requires a study permit, which US citizens can request at a Canadian port of entry, at an airport or a land crossing, instead of applying online in advance. US citizens are exempt from the biometrics requirement. The required documents include:

A letter of acceptance from a Designated Learning Institution;

Proof of financial resources;

A Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL), required for most undergraduate applicants; in Quebec, the Quebec Acceptance Certificate (CAQ) serves as the PAL;

Paying for a Canadian Degree as an American Family

American families can draw on several US and Canadian sources of financial aid for college when funding a Canadian degree, each with its own eligibility rules:

Federal student loans applied for through FAFSA: Students can borrow federal Direct Subsidized and Unsubsidized Loans at Canadian universities that participate in the US federal student aid program. For pre-medical students, Canada offers an advantage over many other international destinations: many US medical schools accept prerequisite coursework from recognized Canadian institutions alongside US coursework. Policies vary, so students should check individual schools through the AAMC’s Medical School Admission Requirements (MSAR) database.

Graduates seeking work experience in Canada may qualify for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP).
